2017 Box Butte General Hospital and Box Butte Health Foundation Educational Scholarship Program:

Box Butte General Hospital’s and Box Butte Health Foundation’s educational scholarship programs offer recipients the opportunity to advance their education in a healthcare occupation and introduces them to the benefits of becoming an employee at Box Butte General Hospital.

Box Butte General Hospital is a Joint Commission Critical Access accredited hospital. Our 25-bed hospital offers primary care for both inpatient and outpatient services. Our educational scholarship program is supported by the administration and governing board in order to assist and recruit well-educated, dedicated employees for Box Butte General Hospital. Internships, shadowing and employment are also encouraged to expose recipients to the hospital environment and maintain connectivity to the community, thus increasing the likelihood of future employment.

INFORMATION

1. Eligibility: 

  • Alliance, Hemingford, Hay Springs or Hyannis High School graduates or seniors in high school and who are residents of Box Butte, Dawes, Morrill, Grant or Sheridan Counties and planning enrollment as a healthcare occupation major in an accredited college program.

OR

  • college students or non-traditional students (e.g. adults looking to change careers; a parent whose children have grown, etc.) who are residents of Box Butte, Dawes, Morrill, Grant or Sheridan Counties and are enrolled in an accredited college program leading to a degree or diploma in a healthcare occupation.
  • Preference is given to current or past BBGH employees. If there are no applicants with employment experience at BBGH, preference will be given to applicants who have regular shadowing experience and/or past membership activities in the BBGH Health Professions Club.

2. Renewal:

Participants are to submit their official college transcript at the completion of each semester to the Nursing Administrative Assistant. Recipients must maintain satisfactory academic status to progress in the program of study for second semester financial assistance. Funding for the second semester will be sent when these conditions are met. If the tuition bill is less than the scholarship amount, the bill will be paid and remaining funds will not be distributed.

Recipients may reapply for funding each year.

3. Amount:

  • $500 Scholarships to seniors or HS graduates
  • $1000 Scholarships to current college students or non-traditional college student.

The scholarship money is payable ½ each semester directly to the school or college. The second ½ is payable when conditions for renewal are met.

REQUIREMENTS for SCHOLARSHIPS from Box Butte General Hospital and Box Butte Health Foundation

Please complete the attached application form and return it with the following information:

  1. Essay: (300-500 words)-Write a concise paper about yourself, why you have chosen a healthcare career, what this scholarship means to you, health professions club activities, relevant work or shadowing experience, and advantages of living and working in a rural isolated area. Also include the personal and professional goals you hope to achieve in your new role as a healthcare professional.
  2. Personal References: *Three personal references are required on official reference forms. Two to three references from faculty or counselors who have recently advised or taught you (past two years) and know your academic and personal attributes and abilities. Reference letter discusses applicant’s motivation, completion of assignments, and academic abilities as well as personal traits related to communication and leadership. One reference from a BBGH supervisor and/or manager if current or previous BBGH employee, in lieu of one faculty reference is recommended, if currently or previously employed (or shadowed) at the hospital. (*If printing off application form and references from website, print 3 reference forms)
  3. Transcripts: Include a copy of your transcripts showing your academic standing to date. Transcripts must also be submitted at the completion of each semester.
  4. Shadowing: Scholarship recipients are encouraged to shadow at Box Butte General Hospital.  Those interested must complete the application found online two (2) months prior to shadowing, must have received an influenza vaccine as required by the CDC in the Fall of 2017 two (2) weeks prior to shadowing AND attend a mandatory orientation before allowed to shadow.  Shadowing experience is to be coordinated through the Nursing Administrative Assistant.

Residents: Seniors in high school from Alliance, Hay Springs, Hemingford, or Hyannis; or graduates who are residents of Box Butte, Dawes, Morrill, Sheridan or Grant Counties.
