![]() A generous anonymous donation in the spring of 2010 allowed the hospital to obtain one of the most advanced digital mammogram machines on the market for use by BBGH clients — a Selenia Digital Mammography unit made by Hologic, Inc. According to the company’s web site, Hologic is “… a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of premium diagnostic products, medical imaging systems, and surgical products created specifically to address the healthcare needs of women throughout the world.” Acquiring this unit has allowed BBGH to become a Pink Ribbon Facility, which stresses the fact that BBGH strives to offer the very best in technology, customer support and patient comfort by offering digital mammography. This distinction is awarded only to an elite group of healthcare facilities. By offering women digital mammograms, the facility hopes to increase the number of area women who follow recommendations for regular screenings by providing them with unsurpassed digital mammography imaging. What is a Mammogram? Mammography is an x-ray of the breasts. The key role of mammography is in identifying a site of breast cancer early in its development when it is very small and often one year before it is large enough to be felt as a lump. Mammography detects about 2-3 times as many “early” breast cancers as physical examination, and is the best method for screening for the presence of a small lump or a tiny group of micro-calcifications which may be the only sign of breast cancer. Even though mammography is the best screening examination available today, some cancers, about 10%, will not be identified by mammography at a stage when they can be felt as lumps. That is why breast self-examination and exams by your healthcare provider at regular intervals are integral components of breast disease detection. Having a Mammogram A mammogram usually consists of two views of each breast in which they are pressed firmly between two plates. The procedure takes only a few minutes and will be performed by a trained female technologist under the supervision of a qualified radiologist. The radiologist will then analyze the x-rays, looking for specific abnormalities or changes related to cancer. Our exams are read by board certified radiologists. Before a Mammogram Please wear a two-piece outfit. Do not use deodorants, powders, ointments or creams in the breast or underarm area. The exam will take approximately thirty minutes. Avoid coming for your mammogram just prior to or during your menstrual period if you have breast pain during that time. If you have breast implants, please inform the receptionist when scheduling your exam.A Mammography Team Who Cares About You Women need to know that they are getting high-quality mammograms when they take a mammography exam. They can be assured that is the case at Box Butte General Hospital because of the diligence and commitment of the hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging staff. BBGH’s Radiology Mammography Program recently passed the Food and Drug Administration’s Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) inspection. MQSA is a federal law that makes sure every mammography facility in the United States meets quality standards. Updated 06/10/10 |
