BBGH Trustees open meeting short

The Box Butte General Hospital Board of Trustees meeting was short Monday evening (lasting only 36 minutes in open session) with Interim CEO Lori Mazanec giving a brief report on the progress of the 1st Phase of The Rehab and Wellness Center progress. “We’ll be removing temporary partitions that have blocked certain corridors while work was being done in those areas beginning this week,” she said. “We’ll be doing our punch list as well. After those items addressed, we’ll start moving into the Phase I area, with a go live date scheduled for October 17.” The Fitness Center has been able to remain open to the public, and will continue to be available throughout the 2nd Phase of the project.

The Trustees also conducted the following business.

They congratulated Andy Leider, PT, DPT, for being named the Employee of the Month for September. Also recognized was JaeAnn Bradt for earning her Certified Meaningful Use Professional (CMUP) credentialing. The board also welcomed new employees  Britny Brass, Pre MLT/MT and Stephanie Amm, ER Tech.

After approving the consent calendar, the Trustees heard Chief Quality Officer Mary Mockerman’s monthly Quality Management and Safety report. She focused Core Measurements for the second quarter in 11 categories. The Core Measurements reported on included Hospital Outpatient Composite Scores; Fibrinolytic Therapy within 30 minutes of Emergency Department (ED) Arrival; Aspirin at Arrival; Median Time for Electrocardiography (ECG); Door to Diagnostic Evaluation by a Qualified Medical Professional; Median Time to Pain Management for Long Bone Fracture; Median Time for ED Arrival to ED Departure for Discharged ED Patients; Median Time for ED Arrival to ED Departure for Discharged ED Patients – Psychiatric/Mental Health Patients; ED Transfer Measures Composite Scores; and Perinatal Care Composite Scores. Trustee Tom Furman had a question on the data used to obtain the median time for ED arrival to ED departure, with Ms. Mockerman explaining length of stay is impacted by the seriousness of the patients’ illnesses and injuries.

Acting Chief of Staff Dr. Timothy Narjes reported the Medical Staff is still working on Core Privileges. He also reported that BBGH Pharmacist Matt Pinneo, PhamD, was present at the last medical staff meeting to give an update on medications that are currently in short supply and others that are no longer on the list. He added that the downtime of a piece of equipment in the laboratory that needed to be repaired indicated that a backup plan should be developed to mitigate any delays of future lab test results if such an occurrence happens again. The current contingency plan includes a courier service to Scottsbluff to have the tests performed.  He concluded by saying flu vaccinations are now available. Asked if he has seen any cases of influenza, he replied that he hadn’t.

There was no financial report, since the hospital is currently in the midst of its annual audit. CFO Bridget Miller said the board will receive complete financial reports for July, August and September once the audit is finished. It was indicated the audit should be concluded in time for presentation at the next board meeting in October.

Ms. Mazanec mentioned that the BBGH Auxiliary Home Tour held Sept. 25 was another success, with seven homes on the tour this year.

In new business, David Briggs entertained a motion for the ratification of the Trustees decision for the elimination of the Chief Ancillary Officer position. Trustee Randy Langemeier, CPA, so moved, with Dr. Furman seconding. The vote was unanimous.

After all credentialing requests were approved, the Trustees entered executive session at 7:35pm to discuss personnel matters. The Trustees re-entered regular session 9:29pm.  Action taken was to accept the resignation from the executive medical staff position and the privileges of Dr. W. Victor Fattig.  The board adjourned at 9:30pm. The next board meeting will be held Monday, October 31, at 12 noon. As always the public is invited to attend.
