GNMSS Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Surgery clinic headed by Stuart Myers, MD

Dr. Stuart Myers

The newest Greater Nebraska Medical & Surgical Services (GNMSS) clinic to be offered to area residents is GNMSS Orthopedic Foot /Ankle Surgery, with Stuart Myers, MD, as the specialist. Dr. Myers is another surgeon associated with Rural Partners in Medicine (RPM), the organization that has been instrumental in providing surgical and clinical procedures at GNMSS. His first day at the clinic was January 21, performing one operation as well as clinicals with patients that afternoon.

Dr. Myers attended Princeton University for undergraduate training, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2002. He obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 2007. Dr. Myers spent his residency at John Hopkins University’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery from 2007 to 2012, followed by obtaining his Fellowship in Orthopedic Surgery at Union Memorial Hospital in 2013. He began his medical career at Colorado Orthopedic Consultants in Aurora, CO that same year, where he practices today.

His advanced training gives him expertise on all disorders of the foot and ankle. He is also trained in trauma and other general orthopedic procedures. “I’ll be doing everything from treating bunions to total ankle replacements,” he said. “Total ankle replacements aren’t as common as, say, total hip replacements. However, the procedure can become necessary after exhausting the usual conservative pain management techniques.” Conservative management of ankle pain and loss of mobility includes anti-inflammatory medication, bracing, physical therapy, activity modification and pain medication. “It’s when those efforts fail to mitigate pain that we would consider a total ankle replacement,” Dr. Myers said. Patients with arthritis after trauma are usually good candidates for the ankle joint replacement. Other patients that should be considered are those that need but do not want a fusion-type procedure that would eliminate the motion at the ankle joint.

Dr. Myers practice will also provide minimally invasive arthroscopic surgeries, foot and ankle sports medicine, and fracture restoration. The frequency of his clinics in Alliance will depend on patient volumes. “I believe right now it will be once a month,” he said. “That could change if volumes increase.”

He enjoys being associated with RPM. “It’s really an eclectic group of physicians and specialists, all of whom provide a wide variety of medical care with a great variety of hobbies and interests,” Dr. Myers said. “I became associated with RPM after becoming friends with Dr. Bryan Scheer.” Dr. Scheer is the originator of the business model of RPM.

Asked why he pursued a career in orthopedics, the Bethesda Maryland native said, “I’ve always loved fixing and building things and have known I’d go into orthopedics since high school.”

He started his professional career in Colorado because of his love for skiing. He also has a private pilot license, enjoying flying as a hobby. “I plan to rent one of my favorite planes and fly myself for my every other week trips to the Panhandle,” he mentioned.
