Lisa Laser USA President visits GNMSS Urologist Dr. Childs at BBGH

From left to right are: Lisa Laser USA, Inc. President Peter Allen, Dr. Stacy Childs and Lisa Laser USA, Inc. Regional Sales Manager Rick Alexander.

When you have medical laser products that make a difference in a patient’s recovery (less pain, less recovery time) and an Urologist who pioneered the use of lasers for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) ablation and stone removal using those products, you want to get him on board for promoting that product. Hence the special visit by Peter Allen, President of Lisa Lasers USA, from his San Francisco area headquarters to Box Butte General Hospital (BBGH) to meet Urologist Stacy Childs, MD, FACS.

“Dr. Childs is well known in the Urologist community,” Mr. Allen said. “He literally wrote the book on the use of laser prostatectomy.” Literally, as in Mr. Allen having Dr. Childs’ book lying next to him during this interview. Rick Alexander, Lisa Laser USA Regional Sales Manager, added, “As a matter of fact, Dr. Childs’ was prominently featured at the AUA (the American Urological Association) conference recently held,” Mr. Alexander said. “We had a colleague come up here and do an interview with him, with the resulting video used by our company at the conference on a constant loop … with the BBGH logo flashing at the end, I might add.” Mr. Alexander was the lead technologist who helped Dr. Childs with laser surgeries at BBGH using Lisa Laser products. “Our company knows that we can’t market our product nearly as well as respected well-known specialists who use them. We’re happy to have Dr. Childs help us do that.”

Dr. Childs said he is pleased with Lisa Laser USA because, “It is a challenge to find reputable companies to send superior products and technicians to rural communities at a reasonable price. Lisa Laser not only came through for us in Alliance but also Lexington and beat the price our hospitals were paying other companies by tens of thousands of dollars per year. And, their lasers are state of the art German engineered devices.” The devices he and a Lisa Laser USA technician use at BBGH include the RevoLix, a Thulium laser used for soft tissue ablation (mostly BPH and bladder tumor surgeries), and the Sphinx, a Holmium laser used for bladder and ureteral stone breakup. What makes the RevoLix the preferred laser for Dr. Childs is the fact that there is less postoperative pain for the patient as well as faster patient turnaround and recovery. It also provides a clearer view for the Urologist while the procedure is being performed since less necrotic tissue is generated, as well as excellent hemostasis (less blood loss). As far as the Sphinx, when breaking stones the shorter the pulse width the better. The Sphinx laser has the shortest pulse width available at 150 microsecs.

AllMed Systems (dba Lisa Laser USA) is the distributor for Lisa Laser Products, a German company formed in 1989. The Katlenburg-Lindau, DE based company has distributions in over 70 countries around the world that have sales and service capabilities. Mr. Allen has been in the field for 40 years in both industrial and medical fields, with a BS in electrical engineering and a Masters in control engineering. A United Kingdom native, he started in the field by setting up a manufacturing facility in the UK for a major United States laser company, before relocating to California to head up a development program in high power CO2 lasers. In 1998, he was part of a startup company developing a range of lasers for the surgical and aesthetic market. “I started AllMed Systems in 2003. The basis for that company was my being contacted by an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist who wanted a laser that he could use transnasally (through the nose) in the office to treat elderly patients who were at risk using general anesthetics in an operating room. I started to develop a laser for him, but after a while I stumbled across Lisa Laser Products in Germany who had exactly what I wanted. So rather than trying to develop something, I offered to distribute their product in the USA.” He resides in Livermore, CA, about 40 miles east of San Francisco.

Mr. Alexander has a biomedical background and has been with Lisa Laser USA since its inception. He resides in Denver, CO. He was the lead technician who helped Dr. Childs during laser procedures using their products. Asked how he liked the new surgical area of the hospital, he said, “I was just telling Peter about that. And yes, your operating rooms in the new facility are beautiful and a pleasure to work in,” he concluded.

Dr. Childs practices at BBGH at Greater Nebraska Medical & Surgical Services Urology, via the Rural Partners in Medicine of Steamboat Springs, CO. Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary tract system and the male reproductive organs. Dr. Childs began practicing at BBGH in January of 2015. He also practices in Lexington, NE at Lexington Regional Health Care.
