BBGH July 2019 Board Report

BBGH continues to focus on maintaining the mission to lead and innovate in healthcare delivery and community wellness by celebrating the achievements of staff, increasing staff education and training opportunities, and reviewing by-laws. The Box Butte General Hospital July Board meeting was called to order at 12:01 p.m. on Monday, July 29th in the Alliance Room at BBGH.

Mary Mockerman, RN, CSW, Chief Quality Officer reported on upcoming events and opportunities for BBGH. Currently, BBGH has six Master trainers in TeamSTEPPS and is adding a seventh. TeamSTEPPS is an evidence-based set of teamwork tools, aimed at optimizing patient outcomes by improving communication and teamwork skills among health care professionals. BBGH implemented TeamSTEPPS in 2010.  Mary also discussed the start of the Nebraska Hospital Association Violence in the Workplace Task Force; the task force will have their first meeting in Lincoln on July 30, 2019 and plans to meet for a year. Mary will bring updates to BBGH as the task force moves forward. On August 13, 2019 BBGH will host a Safe Patient Handling education opportunity. The instructor is an Occupational Therapist and will teach staff how to work with individuals living with dementia or Alzheimer’s along with other safe patient handling techniques.

As BBGH continues to advance in healthcare delivery, by-laws need to be examined and updated as best practices and organizational needs evolve. Mary is working with Lori Mazanec, CEO, MHA, ACHE, to update the current by-laws. BBGH will collaborate with Baird Holm to ensure recommended changes to by-laws will abide by current best practices and legal requirements. 

Lori praised Luke Senden and Matt Pinneo for their work on the 340B Program. The 340B Program was created by Congress to help certain categories of healthcare providers purchase covered outpatient drugs at a reduced price. The hospital has contracted with four pharmacies, including local pharmacies, and received approval for all three rural health clinics under BBGH. Lori also updated the board on the first year’s results of the Gallup Q12 survey process and the next steps as BBGH enters year two. Gallup's Q12 survey is the most effective measure of employee engagement.  “While the numbers of the Q12 are important as a baseline and as a measurement of growth; we have to look at the value of the conversations and actions generated by the work with the Q12 by managers and staff.” Lori stated in closing.

Recent accomplishments include: Heritage Days Float- Commercial Division First Place winner. New employees include Antoinette Kelley and Stacey Petrachek,  Hospital Patient Registration Clerks;  Chamila Jackson and Catherine Sherlock, Environmental Services;  Haley Clark, MLT; Francis Patrick Duldulao, Speech Therapist; Shantel Lurz, RN; Samantha Andreasen, RN; Tian Chen, RN; and Derek Shafer, M.D.

The Board entered Executive Session at 12:34 p.m. and adjourned at 1:25 p.m. with no action taken. The next regular Board meeting is Monday, August 26th with a time to be determined in the Alliance Room. The public is welcome to attend.
